As an inspector I have been telling home buyer and sellers about thier home's problems and deficiencies. Experience has shown that many times the wrong solution is applied with poor results. 

Using wet basements as an example, I have seen sump pumps and interior perimeter drains installed. While they control the water after it enters the home, it does not prevent moisture intrusion. And in many cases dramatically increses harmful radon levels in the home.

Most moisture problems can be corrected by proper grading and working rain gutters and downspouts. But very seldom are these deficiencies corrected. Contractors make more money by installing drains and sump pumps or they just do not understand the problem..let alone the solution.
